Ravenshead shopping, leisure and worshipRavenshead has a thriving shopping precinct with a supermarket, a butcher and greengrocer, a newsagent, a hardware shop, as well as a library, a pharmacy, a post office, two estate agents, financial services, a fish and chip shop and a Chinese takeaway. There are also four public houses in Ravenshead. Other important services include the Ravenshead Surgery, a dentist, Kings Mill Hospital at Sutton-in-Ashfield and community hospitals in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Mansfield.
There are two churches in the community: St Peter's and Newstead Abbey. The nearest Roman Catholic Church is Our Lady Help of Christians at Kirkby-in-Ashfield and there is a Baptist Church at Rosemary Street, Mansfield. The Ashwood Community Church has a new centre in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
There is a strong sense of community within the village and a wide variety of activities, clubs and groups that meet in the leisure centre, village hall, church hall and the local pubs. These include the Rotary Club, two badminton clubs, Ravenshead Reds (football), the village skittles league, the garden society, Abbey Gates WI, and the Gilbert and Sullivan society. The leisure centre boasts tennis and badminton courts, bowling greens and football pitches. There is also a thriving scout group in Ravenshead, which meets in the brand new scout headquarters. The Ravenshead Directory, published every two or three years, gives details of some 50 organisations in the village.
The Cornwater Club for older people meets three times a week at Ravens Lodge, the Scout HQ, as well as the Thursday Club for those slightly more frail or forgetful. Fountaindale School for the disabled and Portland Training College for the disabled are nearby. The local community-run bus service helps the elderly and disabled to reach the shops and other local amenities.
