Ravenshead as we see it

Ravenshead is a popular residential village located in the heart of Nottinghamshire within "Robin Hood Country", and was formed in 1966 when the three hamlets of Larch Farm, Fishpool, and Kighill were joined together. The village is a rectangular shape bounded by Main Road, Nottingham Road, Longdale Lane and Chapel Lane. There are older properties generally dating from the post war period, but the expansion of Ravenshead took place in the 1960s, 70s and 80s with the development of mainly detached houses and bungalows. The population has expanded from 2500 in the late 50's to the current level of about 6500. The village is now served by Ravenshead Parish Council and lies within the borough of Gedling.

Ravenshead is a dormitory village located on the A60 between Nottingham and Mansfield. The Ml and Al motorways are conveniently accessible, there are local and national bus services passing through the village, and national rail links are available at Nottingham and Newark. Nottingham Express Transit operates a frequent tram service from Hucknall park-and-ride directly to the city centre and railway station. Nottingham East Midlands airport is within easy reach; the diocesan centre at Southwell is 11 miles away.

Our local "stately home" is Newstead Abbey, the former home of Lord Byron, which lies adjacent to the village, with the Pilgrim Oak at the Abbey Gates, which allegedly gave refuge to pilgrims en route to the priory.

The local community was originally based on farming, and later industry involved sand quarrying. The majority of workers living in the village are professional and "white collar" workers, mainly employed in nearby Nottingham, Mansfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield, though many commute further afield. There is a high proportion of retired people in Ravenshead, partly because the local facilities are so good and partly because once people live here, they are reluctant to leave!

Many families live in the village and there are two primary schools: Abbey Gates School and Ravenshead Church of England Primary School. These schools feed into Joseph Whitaker Comprehensive School at Rainworth, although some children in the village go to Hucknall National C of E School and Frank Seeley School at Calverton. The nearest universities are the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University.
