NOTICE BOARD - forthcoming events
Back to normal
After the summer break throughout August, with only one service each week, our usual pattern resumes on September 1st. Full details are on the Worship page.Young worship
Children are of course welcome at all our services, though Morning Worship or the occasional Family Communion at 11 am on Sundays are more suitable.Powerpack, for primary school ages, runs in the Church Hall during part of the 11 am services during term times. GAP group, for older children, is on Thursday evenings. Pizza and Praise delivers what it says - food, fun and informal worship - and happens once a month. The September session is on Tuesday the 14th at 4.30 pm in the Church Hall. And for the tinies with any of their accompanying parents, grandparents, relatives and friends who want to come, the Pram Service is on Tuesday September 21st in the Church Lounge.
mothers' union in ravenshead
A promotional meeting has been arranged for Wednesday 15th September in the Church Lounge at 7 for 7.30 pm. Some Diocesan Members will be there, says organiser Sue Banks, and the meeting is open to anyone who would like to hear a little bit more about all the project work supporting families and those in distress in our diocese, nationally and overseas. "Come along and ask questions... By coming to the meeting it doesn't mean you have to join!"an early harvest
This year we are celebrating Harvest in September rather than October, writes Rev Chris, though most of the crops seem to be in by August! In the USA Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday in November, he says, but it's most likely celebrating the Pilgrims' survival of a brutal winter. Harvest Festival in Britain was begun in 1843 at the parish church of Morwenstow in Cornwall and the custom spread quite quickly. All are warmly invited to join us at the Harvest Festival All Age service at 11 am on September 26th. Gifts of fresh, tinned or packet foods are welcome at this service and will go to the Beacon Project for homeless people in Mansfield. Money offerings will go to Christian Aid.
the social round
Our social committee, headed by Jackie Douglas-Kellie, is always hard at work planning the next round of social events. With the record success of the Summer Fair behind it, the group has been busy with the programme for the Autumn.Immediately following the Harvest Festival All Age service there is a faith lunch. (Judging from the similar arrangement at Zoe's welcome party, our faith is very strong is this department.)
Then on October 16th, a Quiz Night and Pie & Peas Supper in the church hall. Details of this are still being sorted out but Jackie says that proceeds will go to the new St Peter's Community Centre. The big one that follows is the Christmas Bazaar on November 27th. So, as they say, watch this space, also the Parish Magazine and Ravenshead Newsletter.
Two in Albania
Nikki Logan, our youth worker, and 16 year old Fiona Hill are taking a trip to Albania with a group of twelve others from Mansfield. They have joined a team there to help run a camp for 13-15 year olds. "The young people we will be working with are children from deprived families who wouldn't get a holiday if it wasn't for these camps", said Nikki before they left. "While we're out there we will be taking part in a variety of different activities but the main things we will be doing are teaching the young people about God and helping them to learn the English language."We look forward to hearing and seeing their presentation when they return.
A projection and sound system
The Vicar writes:The PCC has been looking into the question of a projection and a sound system at St Peter's from the time of the installation of the new organ last year. The advice of the Diocesan advisor has been obtained and he was particularly concerned at the range of acoustic difficulties posed by our building. We want to be able to reinforce spoken sound and project words and images. There is always a case for a cheapest option but on the other hand this investment should be sound in the long term. By analogy with the organ purchase, the aim should be for good quality that enhances worship. Our aim is still to continue to worship in traditional ways but also in modern ways in order to glorify God and build up the church.
Specialist contractors have prepared a specification. This will reinforce spoken sound, especially treble sounds, and increase clarity. Music could also be played through the system and sound accompanying projection. There will be five microphones. The existing hearing loop will be retained.
These developments would enable more people to hear clearly and open up possibilities in worship and for the use of the church building. A good quality sound and projection system will cost 15,000 pounds. Where would the money come from? Because money has been given in the past towards a sound system, the PCC believes that the balance should come out of reserves, which we have been able to build up a little.
The PCC will now seek diocesan permission for this scheme which we hope to install by the end of the year.
